REPAIR QUALITY GUIDE – what you can do to ensure the highest quality of repair work

We are serious about quality. We want to create for you the best images we can, but... we need your cooperation. We need you to work with us, so we can give your photos the superior quality they deserve.

What can you do? – Provide us with your original photograph, or, the best digital file you can produce.

There is nothing as important to ensure the quality of repair work as the initial scan of the image. To get the best possible result, you should choose either of these two options:

A
Send us your original photograph, film, or artwork. We do not charge for scanning(*), so this may be the least expensive and most convenient option for you. We also prefer it, because it allows us to choose the best scanning technique for your image.
If you select this option, please read our PACKING AND SHIPPING GUIDE before mailing your art to us.
(*) Scanning of images larger than 8.5x11 in. may require some charges.
B
Scan your original and send us your digital file. But, please bear in mind, not all scans are good enough for quality repair work. Scans which are entirely adequate for an e-mail or small prints, are often too coarse, and lack the sufficient detail to warrant restoration work. We strongly believe that scans at resolution of 300 dpi or less, and/or files that are significantly compressed (such as JPEG), and of small size (less than 3MB) severely limit the quality of the final image and should be avoided.
If you decide to scan your photo(s), you have the following choices:
1
The easy way: Scan your art at resolution of at least 600 dpi, at color setting, with none of the automatic adjustments such as sharpening, descreening, etc. Save your file as TIF, PSD (Photoshop), or similar formats that do not compress your image. If you must use JPEG, set it to the highest quality value.
2
A little bit more complex, but a more accurate way, guaranteeing the best quality: Please follow the recommendations in our SCANNING GUIDE AND CALCULATOR.
3
Probably the most expensive of the three: Have the scan done for you by a good quality service bureau, using the same settings as described above.
Our policy is to tell you honestly if we believe that the quality of the restored image would improve by a better or higher resolution scan, and to ask you either to redo your scan or send us the original image.
The digital file resulting from your scan will probably be large, maybe 20 or 50 MB – too large to send it to us as an e-mail attachment. That is why we have provided a page UPLOAD YOUR FILE, which is for you to use to send us your large file to our FTP server. Uploading your file this way is as easy as attaching it to your e-mail, it just may take longer; so you probably should do it when your computer can work on it without interruption, for example, at night.

As an alternate way, if uploading to our server is not feasible or convenient – please save your scan to a CD-ROM and mail it to us.
We are serious about quality.
